Tapping into the Gaming Market

Android game developmentLast week we discussed the gaming market and App Partner’s future program to bring mobile games to the web. We mentioned how the gaming market is booming and today I’d like to delve into that a bit more. Just by going to the App Store on my iPhone, I can immediately see that games are the “hottest” and best selling apps. Not to downplay the importance of having notepads, spending habit apps, and restaurant locators –these are all incredibly useful apps that sell just fine– but when people are bored on the subway, they’re going to choose a game over a weather app.

The game market is so large that when you browse the store, it’s broken down into categories/types of games, such as racing, puzzle, action, etc. No other category needs to break down quite so much. That gives you somewhat of an idea about how many games there are. Even the Apple iPod Touch has seen a change in marketing strategy. It went from an intuitive way to listen to music to a gaming device, competing with other handheld devices. Nearly 65% of the 2 billion apps downloaded in the Apple store were games.
